Updated on May 2 with corrected location of The Coliseum Music Venue.
If you’ve ever driven or walked to downtown St. Louis coming from the west, chances are you’ve seen this colorful quartet of buildings on the intersection of Jefferson and Washington Avenue. Named GW Lofts by developer Blue Urban, the buildings are a combination of rental lofts with commercial spaces on the ground floor. The buildings were renovated in 2008 and contain 60 rental units.
Although the buildings started to fill up with loft dwellers immediately after the renovation was finished, the commercial spaces on the ground floor remained vacant. Until now, that is. A new restaurant called The Rustic Goat is currently under construction in the building with the yellow Terra Cotta facade. The restaurant plans to open early June in an expansive 6,500 SF space, not counting a patio and mezzanine.
In the building immediately adjacent to the west, another newcomer is in the process of building out its (rather fancy) interior. A new live music venue called The Coliseum Music Lounge is shaping up for a May 19 opening. The new club will offer live music, from soul to funk to Blues, from local to national acts. It will also feature comedy, fashion shows, and a concept called “Electric Circus” with artists and dancers on Saturdays.
Promoter Ozzie Salcedo has worked in New York, Miami and was Director of Promotions at Tao in Las Vegas. He was also affiliated with Home, the now closed mega-nightclub at the Ameristar Casino. With 9,000 SF The Coliseum is huge and can hold between 750 and 1,000 people. For downtown loft/office dwellers The Coliseum will offer a weekday Happy Hour from 4-7 PM. (For more details about The Coliseum, read this article by Kevin Johnson of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.)
Lastly, in the orange-colored building a new eatery, Washington Avenue Grill, opened early March directly on the corner of Jefferson and Washington Avenue. It’s open daily and the menu consists of burgers, soups, sandwiches, salads, wings and the like.
With new venues like The Coliseum Music Lounge and the recently opened Plush, Hamburger Mary’s and Jive & Wail, the Downtown West/Midtown area seems on its way to re-established itself as the center of gravity for large scale nightclubs, entertainment and live music venues.
