The Coliseum Music Lounge, St. Louis’ newest music venue, will be opening tomorrow, May 17 with their first scheduled event: a Show-Me Burlesque Gala with performances at 8 and 11 PM. On Friday they will feature Dirty Muggs, a Blues/Rock/Soul band from St. Louis, and to top things off, the inaugural Electric Circus will debut Saturday night. This promises to be an exciting multi-media event with aerialists, go-go dancers, a video DJ and light show.

The Coliseum boasts a very sleek, stylish interior, enhanced by utilizing lots of steel, chrome, plush leather, wood floors and upscale furnishings. Special attention was paid to the bathrooms, which are very spacious and constructed with quality materials. With 9,000 SF of floor space The Coliseum is a large venue. It’s big enough to accommodate 750-1,000 people.

Director of Promotion Ozzie Salcedo has worked for clubs in New York, Miami and most notably at Tao in Las Vegas. He was also affiliated with Home, the now closed mega-nightclub at the Ameristar Casino. Besides Salcedo, the team running daily operations consists of bar manager Charles “Mojo” Johns and General Manager Matthew Portell, both industry veterans with many years of  restaurant-, club- and cocktail bar experience.

Johns told us The Coliseum will be offering a special “Skinny Girl” Cocktail line with cocktails under 37 calories (among many other, sometimes exotic sounding options). Portell added that The Coliseum will feature a “Happiest Hour” on weekdays from 4-7 PM, during which all 360 Vodka Cocktails will be priced at $3.60.  He is also putting together a wine list featuring Australian and South American wines, as well as the more well-known Californian labels. An option to order wine flights will be offered.

After our visit last week we left with the impression that not only the venue itself will definitely offer something new and exciting for the downtown/midtown St. Louis area but the members of its management team seem to be capable, experienced and have all ran successful ventures before. The club looks great because great attention to detail was given to the look and feel throughout the interior at a significant investment.

Whether you’re a downtown resident or professional thirsty for a high-end cocktail after work, or a club goer in the weekends, The Coliseum aims to offer each a unique experience.

The Flying Saucer

Number 9, the building of the Cupples family currently under restoration by the Koman Group, will become home to a Flying Saucer Draught Emporium in the fall, according to the St. Louis Business Journal.  Flying Saucer is a Dallas-based restaurant chain with 15 locations in Arkansas, Missouri (Kansas City), Texas, Tennessee, North Carolina and South Carolina.

The Flying Saucer’s owners group does not franchise and the Cupples location will therefore be company-owned.  Cupples 9′s renovation will be finished in September for first tenants Osborn & Barr Marketing on floors 2,3 and 4, Mackey Mitchell Architects on floor 5, and IT consulting firm Asynchrony Solutions on the top 2 floors.

Once all tenants have moved from their current locations Cupples 9 will be 92% occupied. Osborn & Barr is moving from Cupples 8, Mackey Mitchel from their long-time offices near Union Station and Asynchrony from the King bee building at 17th and Washington. Osborn & Barr and Asynchrony are anticipating significant expansion.

Cupples 9 is located at 1120 Spruce Street, a block west of Busch Stadium and caddy corner from the Westin Hotel.
